Petra is the breathtaking legacy of the Nabateans, an industrious Arab people who settled in Southern Jordan more than 4,000 years ago. Over the thousands of years that the Nabateans inhabited the area, they hand-carved “caves” that gradually grew more and more elaborate, until they eventually rivaled the grandeur of contemporary Roman architecture – except that the spectacular structures of Petra were all carved from solid rock rather than being constructed. The efficient water system employed by the Nabateans also remains an inspiring example of resource management.
