| It is my great pleasure to invite you to participate in the International Water Demand Management conference, organized by the Ministry of Water and Irrigation in Cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development. Water scarcity and water shortages are not just a Middle Eastern phenomenon. The future of water resources around the world is under pressure from population growth, industrial needs, environmental degradation, and rapid urbanization. As supply options become more limited, all consumers, as well as managers of water systems, need to become more aware that the future lies in greater efficiency of use. Water Demand Management is a response to the shrinking supply problem. Best management practices in demand management, new technologies in water efficiency, new software in monitoring and tracking use, new industrial processes…all contribute to stretching these limited supplies for the benefit of all. The Kingdom’s underlying water-scarcity, combined with energetic government and donors support that has proven itself forward thinking and eager to adopt water efficiency measures, makes Jordan an appropriate venue for the International Water Demand Management Conference. The conference will be a landmark event for water management, with keynote speakers drawn from among the top international academics, practitioners and dignitaries in the field. Attendees will have the opportunity to travel through out the Kingdom and see water efficiency principles being put into practice. At the same time you will have an opportunity to experience one of the most unique spots on earth, where the first documented irrigation system can still be seen, where you can visit the lowest point on earth at the Dead Sea, marvel at the ancient, rose-red city of Petra, and make a pilgrimage to some of the holiest sites for the world’s three monotheistic religions. I look forward to your attendance at this landmark event. Ahlan wa Sahlan and welcome to Jordan Dr. Hazim El-Naser
