Abstract
Water and electricity are inextricably linked in matters of both supply and demand. This paper presents concepts, strategic approaches, and lessons learned regarding the use of Demand Management techniques in the electric utility sector which are transferable to the water sector. A brief history of the application of Demand Management in the electricity sector is followed by a review of the general steps involved in developing a demand management program as part of an integrated demand-supply strategy. Examples from the experiences of various utilities are provided. The paper concludes with brief comments about supply-side issues common to both resources.
