Reclaimed Water Project (RWP)
Thomas Ziegelmayer, German Technical Cooperation (GTZ)
Abstract
The water sector is the focal area of cooperation between Jordan and Germany. Development cooperation between the two countries aims at integrated water resources management that is sustainable in economic, ecological and social terms. In particular it aims at an increased use of treated wastewater (reclaimed water) and brackish water as substitutes for fresh water, especially in the Jordan Valley.
At present, most of the treated effluents of wastewater treatment plants are mixed with other water and are distributed to about 3,400 farms in the middle and southern Jordan Valley with increasing problems regarding salinity, heavy metals and marketing of crops irrigated with reclaimed water.
Consequently, the project purpose of the joint Jordan Valley Authority – German Technical Cooperation “Reclaimed Water Project” (RWP) is defined as:
"Farmers in the Jordan Valley use reclaimed water for irrigation
in accordance with environmental and public health regulations”
Due to the fact that a wide range of Jordanian governmental and non-governmental organizations are involved in wastewater management, use of reclaimed water and related environmental and health activities, an essential issue of RWP concept is the establishment of working groups and “Round Tables”. These meetings bring together responsible officials from relevant ministries and authorities as well as the private sector to coordinate environmental and health related monitoring, disseminate information and create awareness. A systematic state environmental monitoring program is implemented into the routine of authorities by RWP to make sure there is no negative impact from the reclaimed water on soil, groundwater and crops.
