Abstract
This paper aims at presenting the CSBE Water Conserving Landscapes project, a project that the Center for the Study of the Built Environment (CSBE) (2) is implementing through support from WEPIA (Water Efficiency and Public Information for Action), a program being implemented in collaboration with the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation and funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This project is concerned with the introduction and dissemination of the principles and practices of water conserving landscapes in Jordan.
The paper provides a brief introduction to the principles of water conserving landscapes. It also provides an overview of the activities that CSBE has carried out as part of its Water Conserving Landscapes project. Those activities include organizing lectures, workshops, and a course on water conserving landscapes; publishing information on water conserving landscapes in print format and on the Internet; organizing a competition for the design of a low-income water- and energy-conserving housing unit in Aqaba; designing and implementing a model water conserving park in Amman; and providing community-based organizations with technical support for establishing income-generating nurseries for the propagation of drought tolerant plants.
