Ihab Mohamed Shaalan, Environmental Management Consultant

ABSTRACT
While Egypt is famous for attracting culture and historical tourism, there are ongoing efforts to develop leisure coastal tourism along the Red Sea coast. Many beach resorts are now in operation and there are still hundreds to be constructed. The ambitious development plans to receive 16 million tourists by 2017 should take into consideration the sustainability concepts. Both the Government of Egypt and developers have significant roles to play in adopting and implementing environmentally sound policies and practices to reduce the pressure on natural resources and ensure the sustainability of the development in these new regions Fresh water is very scarce in the Red Sea and represent one of the key limitations to development in that region. It is essential to adopt practices that conserve the use of fresh water and use it in the most efficient way in order to sustain the huge investment that have been allocated for tourism development in that region.
