“Protecting the Dead Sea” presentation by H.E Dr. Hazim El-Naser, Minister of Water &Irrigation and Minister of Agriculture

5:00pm-5:30pm

The Dead Sea is considered an international treasure due to its environmental, cultural and economic uniqueness. It is the lowest point on Earth and the world’s saltiest large water body. Over the years the level of the Dead Sea has declined from historic levels of about 395 meters below sea level to its present level of 410 meters. There is an environmentally suitable solution to protecting and saving the Dead Sea through the realization of the Red Sea – Dead Sea Project.

The project is to convey approximately 1.8 billion cubic meters per year of sea water 180 kilometers from the Gulf of Aqaba on the Red Sea to the vicinity of the Dead Sea at a cost of 800 million US dollars. A reverse osmosis system  will transform seawater to freshwater. The freshwater produced would be sufficient to meet the water needs of the region for the foreseeable future. The concept would resolve freshwater needs for the immediate region and contribute to fostering peace. His Excellency, Dr. Hazem Al Naser, Jordan’s Minister for Water and Irrigation and also Minister for Agriculture will make the presentation on the Red-Dead initiative.
